Tomorrow is a new day. A chance to make things better for ourselves. Will you step up to the plate? Will you boycott businesses until your voice is heard? Will you carry on as usual? I won't.
In the last few days the country that most of us call home has been rocked with an extreme wave of violence. Two Black men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, were both murdered by law enforcement officers. Alton Sterling was murdered while he sold CDs outside of a convenience store and Philando Castile was just on his way home from the grocery store. Both gruesome murders were caught on video. Sterling's from two different bystanders at two different angles and Castile's death was live streamed on his fiancee's Facebook page. Both men were working fathers, loved by many and had committed no crime. They were also both licensed to carry weapons. It's times like these that make us all wonder: "If these men had been white, under the same circumstances, would they be alive today?" Unfortunately, that answer is a resounding "Yes". Too often Black brothers and sisters are seen as aggressive, thugs, instigators or simply defiant without even raising their voices. I couldn't even tell you how many posts, tweets and articles from racist people who actually support the murder of anyone that doesn't fit the "All American" mold. Our children have been labeled "Super Predators", our women are degraded and our men are used for target practice. In writing this article I took to the internet to see exactly what was being said about us. What I found was shocking but expected. Brothers and sisters, we have to start uplifting one another. Speak life into your children. Speak life into your partner. The world, outside our doors, is against us and we have to find the safe place within each other. We have to realize that in the eyes of any oppressor we are ALL THE SAME. We are ALL expendable. That is how the world sees us. We have to stand together in unity and stop killing soldiers in our own army! If they're against us and we're against us, how long before there is no us?
Tomorrow is a new day. A chance to make things better for ourselves. Will you step up to the plate? Will you boycott businesses until your voice is heard? Will you carry on as usual? I won't.
